Critical Path Analysis

Purpose

Critical Path Analysis is a planning technique for major projects. Activities are sequenced and their durations estimated. This enables planners to predict completion dates, to carry out ‘what if’ investigations, to improve their plan and to monitor progress throughout the project. Planning is made more effective by the identification of the critical path. Activities on the critical path, if allowed to slip, will delay the achievement of the whole project. Focusing on critical path activities leads to better use of time and to improvements which may bring forward completion dates.
